The Holy City Doula Logo

A birth doula guides a woman through childbirth by supporting her soul: her mind, will, and emotions.

A doula supports mom’s mind by resourcing her before birth and encouraging her calming rhythm during birth. She supports mom’s will by helping her make informed choices for and during birth, and the doula supports mom’s emotions by calming her fears about birth, even reducing the pain she may experience in non-medical ways.

I am currently accepting births with due dates as late as Jan 31, 2025. I will resume taking births again with due dates starting June 1, 2025. My own baby is due late February!

My Story

Hi, I’m Becca Fleming!

Up until I was married, I was afraid of childbirth. I said it in all kinds of ways that sounded good in my head, that I wasn’t the right shape for it, or how it was better for me to adopt instead. When I was confronted with it in marriage preparation, I knew I needed to change my mindset and trust God instead. He was gracious and gave me the desires of my heart to match His.

Over the next few years, we had two early losses and then a year of waiting for a baby. When God gave us another, it was time to get serious about facing my fear and preparing to do this well. I read everything I could find and ended up loving the way my hard birth went.

Over a year later, I found myself loving talking with other first time moms about their pregnancies and their hopes for birth, and ways I might be able to encourage or resource them. My husband noticed this growing passion and encouraged me to pursue it, so in the spring of 2024 I became a birth doula! I love that I get to invest in the women of Charleston in this amazing way.

When I’m not at a birth, I love playing with my daughter Millie, doing some freelance graphic design projects, and serving my church, Vertical Church Charleston.

FAQs

What are the benefits of hiring a birth doula?
  • Makes a woman less likely to ask for an epidural or other pain medications
  • Reduces the chances of a C-section by at least 28%
  • Labor can be up to 25% shorter
  • Baby is 38% less likely to receive a low APGAR score five minutes after birth
  • 34% less likely to rate their birth experiences as negative
But what if I know I want medication?

Sure! I’m here to help you have a birth you feel good about. Part of that is making informed decisions, so I’ll resource you with the knowledge you need so you can make the decision that’s right for you and your baby. I’ll walk with you and support your birth plan however it looks.

Can we meet with you first?

Of course! I’m available for virtual interviews lasting up to 45 minutes. We’ll get to know each other a bit, then go over my contract, which details how this whole thing plays out from pregnancy to postpartum, and then answer any remaining questions. There’s no obligation, and ultimately I want you to be with the doula that makes you feel the most supported.

What training or certifications do you have?

I completed doula training on May 30, 2024 under Robin Elise Weiss, the president of DONA International. This begins my track to becoming a certified doula, which includes extra reading requirements and the experience of being a doula in at least three births. I expect to become certified by the end of the year.

My training included comfort measures, childbirth basics, breastfeeding basics, and how to help you make informed decisions before and during labor.

How many clients do you take?

I take on up to 3 clients per month. I want to be able to invest in each one and in my own family. Send me an inquiry below to see if I am available in your due date range!

Where do you work?

I’ll go anywhere in the Charleston area that you want to give birth within about 20 miles from Tanger Outlets.

This includes North Charleston, Summerville, West Ashley, Charleston peninsula, and Mt Pleasant. Hospitals and birthing centers in this area include Charleston Birth Place, MUSC, East Cooper, Roper downtown, and Roper St Francis (West Ashley, Mt Pleasant, and Cane Bay). I will also attend your Charleston-area home birth!
